Long before the church was called the church, it consisted of an assembly of Jewish believers who practiced Judaism as part of their devotion to Yeshua of Nazareth.

In the days that followed the spiritual outpouring of Shavuot (Pentecost), the disciples found themselves shepherding a large community of new disciples in Jerusalem. Three thousand men and women received the message about Yeshua and immersed themselves for His name. Many of these joined themselves to the community of his disciples in the holy city.

The early chapters of the book of Acts offer us a snapshot of the Jerusalem community that eventually came to be called the ekklesia, that is, the church. A close look at the first "church" reveals how very Jewish it was. The Jerusalem community committed itself to basic Jewish

priorities such as the study of Torah, hospitality, holy-day meals, and the daily prayers. The Jewish believers continued to participate in the Temple and, in fact, considered the Temple to be the geographic center of their community. They lived communally, not unlike the first-century Jewish sect called the Essenes. The following commentary on Acts 2:41-47 offers a snapshot of the early Jerusalem community before the church was called the church.
