Havdalah – Making
a Beautiful Distinction

By Aaron Eby for Messiah Magazine
First Fruits of Zion

& Brenda Storch
Every Saturday night, my friends and family squeeze together around a long table. The children squeal and dance in anticipation of a custom that has become very meaningful and important to us. We celebrate the end of the Sabbath together with a service known as havdalah.

In Hebrew, havdalah (הבדלה) means “division, distinction, or separation.” It is a ceremony that serves to separate the holy time of the Sabbath from the six ordinary days of work. For us, havdalah has become even more than a fun and enriching tradition; it has also served as a very real way to guard the Sabbath day and keep it holy as we are instructed in the fourth commandment:

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy… For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the

seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed
the Sabbath day and made it holy.
(Exodus 20:8, 11)
