The Importance of Shabbat

  “On the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.” (Genesis 2:3)
I know that I did an article on the Sabbath a few years ago but I felt that it was timely to remind us all once again how important it is.

One of the earliest disagreements that Rabbi Jeremy and I ever had was over the commandments (and yes, we do disagree occasionally). Growing up Catholic I was taught to believe that the 4th commandment was to honor your father and mother. My Jewish husband looked at me with amazement and said, “The 5th commandment is to honor your father and mother, the 4th commandment is to remember and rest in Shabbat, didn’t you read your Bible?” I had to

honestly answer that well, no; I hadn’t read it in a lot of years and never seriously. It was that moment when God began my search for His truth. As time has gone on and I have been thrust deeper into Messianic Judaism, Shabbat has become a deeply personal holiday to me.

Shabbat is so important in the eyes of God that it is the only feast or festival that is included in the 10 commandments.
