Stewardship in a Fallen Culture

By Rabbi Neil Lash

Rabbi & Brenda
by Rabbi Jeremy
& Brenda Storch
A steward is one who is charged with “the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care.” Since the Scriptures tell us that: “The earth is the LORD’s, and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein (Psalm 24:1),” it is clear that everything and everyone belongs to God, and all of us are stewards of what He has entrusted to us.

First of all we live in a “culture of discontent,” driven by advertising, marketing, greed, and pride .Hardly any of us will ever be able to discern the difference between pictures taken with a “2 megapixel” and a 7 “megapixel” camera. Nevertheless, the pressure to get the “newest” is great, and to many, almost irresistible. Does that extra horsepower really do anything but get me to the next red light and gas station quicker?
Our “culture of achievement,” with its intense emphasis on “being number one” also hinders our willingness to be good stewards, especially of our time.
