Sacrifices, Our Gifts to G~d

Angela Kunkel
Angela Renee Kunkel

If you consult a dictionary for the word “sacrifice”, more than likely you will find it’s definition to be “an act of slaughtering an animal or person; or surrendering a possession as an offering to G~d or to a divine or supernatural figure”; or “offer or kill as a religious sacrifice”.  But what is
a “sacrifice”?

Most of us perceive “sacrifice” as an act of giving up something valued for the sake of something else regarded as more important or worthy. As parents, we might find that our children might excel in a certain areas of academics or sports. We might take it upon ourselves to find our children extra tutoring or special coaching.  In doing so it is the parents that end up doing the “sacrificing”.  When a woman finds out she is expecting a child, she might begin “sacrificing” to the extent of giving up bad habits or making better choices when nutrition is concerned.  Let’s face it, the average cost of raising a child from birth to age 18 is $750,000.00. So you might conclude having a child is a sacrifice.
The book of Leviticus (Vayikra) links the closing paragraph of the Book of Exodus with the religious practices within the Tabernacle itself, and therefore it focuses on the various forms of offerings and sacrifices.  These sacrifices were integral to the worship of the Holy One. As the climax of the Holy One’s revelation at Sinai, the Mishkan (Tabernacle) became the place of His revelation (Exodus 25:22, 30:36) and the focus of corporate worship.  Prophetically, the Mishkan represented the redemptive plan of the Holy One, for Israel, that culminated in the revelation of Yeshua the Messiah as the appointed Lamb
of G~d.
