The Miracle of the Oil

Angela Kunkel
Angela Renee Kunkel

The olive tree is one of the seven species blessed in the Holy Land. From the dawn of creation, the people of Israel knew how to appreciate the special qualities of the olive tree.

The olive fruit and the oil stored within it were more than food for the Children of Israel, it actually was a symbol of prosperity, stability, joy and health. Olive oil was an essential part of one’s diet, it was used in cooking, lighting, as a cosmetic for the face, to heal and sooth wounds, currency, to anoint Kings, and was even used as a weapon (boiling oil was poured on the Romans as they attacked the walls of the city). In contrast, the lack of oil was a sign of disaster, judgement, and curse (Deuteronomy 28:40).

Oil itself is the most politically incorrect of all liquids, since it simply refuses to compromise its uniqueness. In other words, if oil was a person it would almost certainly be condemned for it’s stubborn unwillingness to blend with others. Mix it with water and it
stays separate and maintains its own identity.

At Hanukkah we learn and are reminded of the war between the Syrian Greeks and the Maccabees. This war was unlike any other. This was a ‘clash of cultures’. On one side you had a Jewish culture that embraced a monotheistic faith and adherence to G-d given moral, civil, and ceremonial laws. On the other side you had a Greek culture who viewed the Jewish ways a threat. The Greeks worshipped the holiness of beauty and the Jews wanted to teach that the world itself was the beauty of holiness.

Sounding the Shofar

The victory of the Maccabees was the triumph of those who exemplified the unique characteristic of the oil and the refusal to assimilate.
